Turkestan is the most ancient center of southern Kazakhstan; in the Middle Ages, the city was the capital of the Kazakh Khanate. Here you can see the main architectural monument, an unsurpassed masterpiece of medieval architecture - the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, with an elegant tiled mosaic on the stone slabs. The mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, having world-famous complexes of historical and cultural landmarks, is entered in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Persian masters brought here the high art of ceramic glaze. The mausoleum was built by the order of Amir Timur in honor of the great enlightener of Central Asia, Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, and it is considered one of the tallest ancient buildings in Central Asia.
In ancient times, the main forty-meter dome pointed the way to the steppe equestrians. The Great Timur built the most beautiful architectural structures not only as a tribute to the memory but also for the enemy hordes to stand in admiration when arrived at this city and not to destroy it. Many archaeological sites were destroyed, but to the present day, they are included in the historical and cultural reserve − the Otrar Oasis.
